A site well worth checking out is Trucker Tom’s Tattoo page. We first heard of Tom a few years ago when he was (and still is!) a star of the podcasting scene. Tom was a regular on Adam Curry’s Daily Source Code show at a time when podcasting was just beginning to explode and people like Adam Curry and his Podshow company were at the forefront of this DIY media broadcasting revolution. Tom, a man of surprises to say the least, applies himself with diligence to many interests, from trucking and tattooing to biking and computer maintenance.

A man of many talents and just as many kick ass tattoos!

Barack Obama Tattoos

This is one way of celebrating Barack Obama’s victory that could possibly backfire for many, many reasons. As cool as these tattoos are, it’s probably worth waiting until the end of his term before committing to something like this. What if he ends up being the most hated president ever (highly unlikey), or completely trashes the economy?

You’ve got to admire the conviction that this sort of commitment makes, though. Whatever happens during his term (or terms), perhaps the victory alone is worth celebrating?

George Reiger – The Disney Tattoo Guy

George Reiger, the Disney Tattoo Guy

George Reiger, the Disney Tattoo Guy

Wow, this is a true one-off! This guy loves Disney so much he has covered his body with Disney tattoos. How crazy is that? Well, due to the closely guarded copyright of all Disney intellectual property (not dissimilar to Lucasfilm!) George Reiger has permission to wear these tattoos as long as he isn’t allowed to make any money from them, and for some reason they stipulate all tattoos are to be done by the same artist.

To be honest, we’re not too keen on these tattoos, as they seem very unconfidently sketched and the colours are pretty wishy-washy, but as long as he’s happy with them that’s all that counts!

The Mickey Mouse watch is definitely the best one for comedy value!

We wonder whether he obtained permission before or after getting himself inked….

Robbie Williams Maori Tattoo

Robbie Williams Maori Ta Moko Tattoo

Robbie Williams Maori Ta Moko Tattoo

The excellent tattoo sported by pop star Robbie Williams has courted more than a little controversy! Some reports suggest it was done by Henk Schiffmacher, although in truth it seems that renowned Maori tattoo artist Te Rangitu Netana created the work.

According to the artist himself, traditional Maori tattoos are deeply rooted in Maori culture, with many different styles and messages particular to each tribe. Apparently Mr Williams tattoo was not based on any extensive research or spiritual meaning significant to him, which is a shame as Maori can get quite offended when people outside of their culture appropriate something of deep meaning, spirituality and importance and use it as they like. Can’t say I blame them really!

As amazing as Maori, and in particular Ta Moko, designs are, it seems advisable to consult extensively with someone who is actually Maori in order to acquire a suitable tattoo that honours the history of Maori and really means something to the wearer.

There’s no doubt that swallows and the whole old school tattoo aesthetic are well and truly back in fashion. There’s no shortage of swallow designs doing the rounds at the minute, but these gorgeous designs from Toni Moore at Modern Body Art are the best we’ve seen in a long time – truly graphic and illustrative and she has a great eye for colour. There’s plenty more on offer at the website from other artists too, making it a goldmine of inspiration!

Great news today – the Body Illustrated tattoo flash shop is now open.

It’s a modest start with just the one design available for now, but please bear with us as the library grows – there is plenty of artwork ready to go online for your delight, it’s just a case of finding the time to get it all up there!

All designs will be professionally rendered vector artwork, featuring the fully shaded and coloured version along with the outline. The artwork is in PDF format, so it can be scaled to any size (even billboard size!) and there will be no loss of quality or sharpness!

In the meantime, why not have a look at the fledgling shop

The Phenomenal Tomas Tomas

Amazing Tattoos by Tomas Tomas

Amazing Tattoos by Tomas Tomas

This is without a doubt the most amazing body of work I’ve seen for a long time. The only way to describe the work of Tomas Tomas is completely original! To me, the reason his designs work so well is the juxtaposition of the strong, heavy yet elegant geometric shapes against their subtle shading. Tattoo art generally seems to shy away from geometry and straight lines in favour of more organic, flowing designs that complement body shapes, so it’s a real treat to see something so at odds with the usual approach working so well!

Please Check the Spelling!

We don’t want to sound too preachy or anything, but if you’re going to have a text based tattoo, it really is worth checking the spelling – the tattooist’s machine won’t automatically create a wiggly red under-line if the spelling is wrong!

The unfortunate tattoo shown below could have really benefitted from a quick spell check. The difficult thing with tattoos is making that big decision to get something permanent inked onto your body – trying to bear in mind what you might like in the future and how to reconcile that with what you love at the present. At some point, we’ll all probably regret a tattoo a little, but it will be SO much easier to live with if at least it’s spelt correctly!

The tatt shown below should really read ‘you’re mine’ as in ‘you are mine’ (abbreviated), but as it actually says ‘your mine’, so you might expect (if you’re a pedantic spell bore like me) a picture of a mine (coal, tin, gold copper etc) below the words. But no.

Again, it’ so little effort to check the dictionary, yet it really is worth the effort!
